Nestled on the peaceful southern coast of Puerto Rico, the town of Yauco or ‘the city of coffee’ as it is more informally known, boasts a myriad of historic buildings & homes. Post-colonization, Yauco became a hub of architecture in Puerto Rico. Perhaps due to the unique immigration of Europeans to Yauco, there were different stylistic influences brought to the region. Many Corsicans immigrated to Yauco under Spanish land grants from the Royal Decree of Graces of 1815 to work in agricultural industries such as tobacco, sugar and most notably coffee. As you will notice, the names of the estates and houses often reflect the Corsican origins.
While traveling through Puerto Rico, you’ll definitely enjoy a stop in Yauco to enjoy a stroll through it’s tranquil yet welcoming streets. Enjoy a delicious coffee while you admire the artwork of the Yaucromatic movement, enjoy the architecture of historic buildings and explore the once former capital of the Taíno land of Borikén.
In this post, I’ll showcase many of the historic buildings and houses of Yauco with the history behind them and how to find them. Most of these houses are centrally located in Yauco Pueblo which makes them convenient to visit or find by walking around the city.
