Ponce Carnaval 2027: Dates, itinerary and what to expect

New here? This is the 2027 preview. For the full history, the vejigantes, and what the carnival is about, see our complete guide: Carnaval Ponceño: The Complete Guide. Interested in previous years? Check out the 2026 event!

Carnaval Ponceño 2027 has not had its official dates or lineup released yet. Based on the pre-Lenten calendar, we expect it to run roughly Thursday, February 4 through Tuesday, February 9, 2027, closing the day before Ash Wednesday. Until we get an update from the committee, treat that as our estimate, not a confirmed schedule. Given the Carnaval de Vejigantes de la Playa usually takes place before. We think that will be on Friday, January 29 through Sunday, January 31. We will update this page with the official dates, the theme, and the full lineup as the Municipio de Ponce announces them.

Why we expect February 4 to 9, 2027

Carnaval Ponceño is a pre-Lenten carnival, so its dates move every year with the Catholic calendar. The celebration traditionally runs six days and closes on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, the night of the Entierro de la Sardina. In 2027, Ash Wednesday falls on February 10, which puts Shrove Tuesday (Mardi Gras) on February 9. Working back six days from that Tuesday gives a likely window of Thursday, February 4 to Tuesday, February 9, 2027.

This is the same logic the organizers follow, but they set the official calendar themselves, and details like an extended run, pre-carnival nights, or a shifted opening can change the exact days. Do not book flights around our estimate alone. Confirm with the official channels below before you commit.

What to expect at Carnaval Ponceño 2027

The lineup changes every year, but the shape of the week is remarkably consistent. Here is the sequence the carnival has followed edition after edition, which is a reliable guide to how 2027 will likely unfold once the schedule drops.

  • Baile de Máscaras (opening night). The masked ball that opens the carnival and brings out the vejigante masks.
  • Entrada del Rey Momo. The parade that installs the carnival’s mock king and hands the city over to the festivities.
  • Coronación de Reinas. The coronation of the carnival queens, with a daytime circus and children’s activities that make it the family-facing day.
  • Desfile de Carrozas (Sunday). The grand float parade, the centerpiece, running through downtown to Plaza Las Delicias. This is the day most visitors plan around.
  • Baile de Salsa (Monday). The salsa night, usually anchored by a major orchestra or bandleader.
  • Entierro de la Sardina (Tuesday). The mock “burial of the sardine” that closes the carnival, when King Momo is finally unmasked.

If you want to understand any of these traditions in depth, the vejigantes, the Rey Momo, the meaning of the sardine burial, our complete guide covers all of it.

The Playa pre-carnival

Ponce holds a separate, grassroots carnival in the days before the main event: the Carnaval de Vejigantes de la Playa de Ponce, down in the Playa neighborhood at Parque Lucy Grillasca, the birthplace of the vejigante. It has its own King Momo, its own queens, and its own sardine burial, and it is highly participatory. If it follows its usual pattern, expect it in the week ahead of the main carnival, likely late January. We expect January 29th-31st. We will confirm dates here once they are set. For how the two carnivals relate, see our complete guide.

Where it happens

The carnival centers on Plaza Las Delicias, Ponce’s central square, by the cathedral and steps from the candy-striped Parque de Bombas, with parades running along Calle Isabel and, on parade Sunday, from Bulevar Miguel Pou through downtown.

Plaza Las Delicias, the heart of Carnaval Ponceño.

How to plan around an unconfirmed date

A few practical pointers while the official calendar is still pending:

  • Hold, do not book. If you are planning a trip, pencil in the February 4 to 9 window but wait for the official announcement before buying non-refundable flights or lodging.
  • Book lodging early once confirmed. Ponce fills up during carnival week. When the dates are official, reserve quickly.
  • Sunday is the parade. If you can only come for one day, aim for the Sunday float parade, the visual peak of the week. In our estimated window that would be February 7, 2027.
  • Watch the official channels. The lineup and exact times usually drop a few weeks out. Follow the links below so you catch the announcement.
